This morning the following Lucille Ball quote came into my inbox. And it got me thinking about regret…
I try to live my life without regret.
This might mean speaking up to ask a question. Drawing a line in the sand and taking a stand for something I believe in. Accepting an invitation even when I’m nervous about going. Sharing an image online of something I’ve created. Giving my kids a kiss at the school gate. Having a hard discussion to clear the air. Asking for something. The list is endless.
And it doesn’t guarantee that my life will be without disappointment or failure. But I’ve come to realise that I’d much prefer to know that I’ve done my best and given something a try rather than wondering ‘what if…?’ throughout my life.
So today’s blog is about encouraging you to say “What if…?” and then having a go. It’s about giving yourself permission to let yourself dream big and then doing something to move towards that dream.
So have you ever wanted to learn how to play the piano? Go on an overseas hiking adventure? Create a dream garden? Set up a boutique business? Make new friends?
It doesn’t matter what it is – as long as it’s something that makes your heart sing.
And I’m not suggesting that you do anything foolhardy or dangerous. Do whatever you need to do to move towards this dream in a way that is supportive and life affirming for you – take a class, get professional help, join a support group, look up You Tube.
Also, it’s not always about spending big either. While it was exciting to go into the art store for more watercolour paint supplies, I soon realised that I could still create some pretty nice paintings with the colours I already had. And if you’re dreaming of getting a pilot’s licence then start putting away some regular savings to slowing chip away at taking your lessons.
And sometimes our dreams can change too. Sarah used to come home from work bursting to make cards to sell at the local fair, but now her craft supplies are sitting in the spare room gathering dust. That’s ok. Things change. Maybe she’ll pick it up later on? Or she’ll use the crafts in another way? Perhaps her passion could resurface in another form?
The point is to let yourself delve into the depths of your heart and imagination to ask yourself ‘What do I really want to do?’ and ‘What will I regret not having tried?’
Let yourself listen to the secret wish you have inside and give it a voice.
A while ago I wrote another blog called ‘How are you going to live your big dream today?‘ In it I wrote about how it’s important to dream big, but to not push your dream away into the ‘one day’ basket and start doing something no matter how small to bring that dream into your life today. So please read that blog if you’re in need of some inspiration of living your big dream today.
And for those of you that have a business – Do you have a secret dream for yourself in your business? If not, then please consider coming along to The Castle in the Sky Visual Plan Workshop in late July. This workshop will help you tap into your intuition and express your vision for yourself in your business. And if you know exactly what you want then this workshop will also help you present your goal in an inspiring way and work out the steps to get there. (This event has now been run, but sign up to find out about the next Inner Creative planning workshop, as well as other useful creativity tips.)
As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts or if you have any further questions.
