It’s easier to put up with a momentary discomfort or face our resistance when we can see the finish line for what we’re doing.
Next time you feel yourself flagging, remember your why (as in Tip 1).
It’s also powerful to imagine the finish line.
What’s the end result or outcome that you’re aiming for by doing this task?
Use your imagination to make this picture as vivid as you can.
Incorporate as many senses as you can into your vision. What will the outcome look like? What do you picture yourself doing? Where will you be? Who will be there with you? Will there be any particular sounds there? And most importantly, what will it feel like to have achieved the final outcome?
This may seem a little elaborate for motivating yourself to do that routine report. At the very least, you can focus on the sense of relief when you press the ‘save’ or ‘send’ button when it’s finally finished. Use that feeling of relief to move you forward into starting to type.
Connecting into a richer vision can give you an even bigger boost to get started, especially for larger projects.
So, what’s your finish line? Where do you want to be? And what does it look like and feel like to be there?
